Health Canada offers two types of licenses for cannabis cultivation.A micro-cultivation licence allows to produce cannabis plants and seeds, fresh and dried cannabis. A micro cultivator can use a canopy area of up to 200m2 (around 2152 ft2) for growing cannabis plants. It is a great starting point for an entry level license into the cannabis space and ideal for craft cannabis production by small business owners that do not desire mass production. A micro cultivator is also able to sell and distribute cannabis and cannabis products to other licensees for further processing. All licensees are allowed to conduct ancillary activities such as drying, trimming, curing and milling.
Standard Cultivation license
A standard cultivation licence allows to possess and obtain dried or fresh cannabis, cannabis plants or cannabis seeds by propagating, cultivating, and harvesting. The license holder may sell and distribute fresh and dried cannabis, plants and seeds to other licence holders. The licensees are able to tie into other licence classes on the same site, giving them flexibility in the competitive market. Canopy space may be expanded as much as licensees desire while micro cultivation licenses only allow 200m2 (around 2152 ft2) for growing cannabis plants. License holders are allowed to conduct ancillary activities such as drying, trimming, curing and milling.
Nursery license
a nursery license permits a company to develop cannabis and hemp genetics to produce seeds, seedlings (starter plants) and clones. They can then sell and distribute cannabis plants or seeds to other license holders such as cultivators, processors, or researchers.A nursery license holder can use the total surface area up to 50m2 (around 538 ft2). This limit only apply to flowering plants but not to non-flowering plants such as plants in vegetative stage or clones.
